LIVES Doctoral Programme – Multilevel Modelling, SEM, and Longitudinal Data

07/11 Sep 2026

The next module of the LIVES Doctoral Programme, entitled “Multilevel Modelling, SEM, and Longitudinal Data”, will take place in September 2026:

  • 7-8 September 2026, University of Geneva – Structural Equation Modelling (SEM), taught by Paolo Ghisletta
  • 10-11 September 2026, University of Lausanne – Multilevel Modelling, taught by Nicolas Sommet

The first part of the module will introduce the foundations of structural equation modelling (SEM) and its applications in R, using packages such as psych, lavaan, and semPlot. Participants will then learn how to apply SEM to two-occasion data (e.g., pretest–posttest or Wave 1–Wave 2) and, subsequently, to multiple-wave data typically encountered in panel studies. Detailed programme here.

The second part will focus on understanding and applying multilevel modelling to two-level cross-sectional data, using R or Stata (with SPSS also supported). The second day will extend these approaches to longitudinal data, where repeated observations (Level 1) are nested within participants (Level 2). Participants will also be introduced to the Mundlak specification, allowing within-participant and between-participant associations to be distinguished. Detailed programme here.

Although the module is primarily intended for participants in the LIVES Doctoral Programme, a limited number of places are available for LIVES researchers who would like to attend.
